Garrett this time. Long story short, but it seems Kaylee fell on Garrett's foot with her knee. Anyone who knows Kaylee knows she is a busy girl who likes jumping and falling. And somehow her bony knee landed square on Garrett's foot.
He cried hard which was unusual for him. But I didn't know what was wrong. He just wanted to be held and kept putting his hand over his face. I thought maybe he hit his head or something. I gave him a bottle and he fell asleep. I was hoping when he woke up he'd be happier.
Well, he wasn't happier. Instead he was screaming bloody murder (standing in his crib, but I still didn't know what was wrong). I decided to take him outside where the rest of the family was, and when I tried to put his shoe on he REALLY screamed. That's when I noticed his left foot was swollen and he wouldn't stand on it.
The ER trip diagnosed 3 broken metatarsal (the ones on top) bones in the foot. No cast. Instead they suggested a hard soled boot, but the smallest one they had was twice as long as his foot! So we were sent home with nothing but a prescription for pain medicine and instructions for him to wear a bigger size shoe. Great.
What am I going to do with a kid who can't walk now? And keeps trying to stand up which results in screaming and needing to be carried?
For starters it's going to mean lots of carrier time on my back (thanks to my great friend, Courtney, who loaned us her Ergo carrier for our trip to China and graciously is allowing me to keep it until Garrett is better). Probably lots of time in the high chair snacking. Maybe even bringing a stroller in the house. Only problem is Garrett isn't happy just sitting still. He wants the stroller MOVING.
I can't fathom how bones in a foot can heal without being protected or somehow splinted in some way. Guess I'll be calling the pediatrician on Monday for advice. I'll also happily take any and all advice if anyone has anything to share!
